As winter gives way to the early signs of spring, our vineyard in Cutchogue, nestled in the heart of Long Island Wine Country, is beginning to stir, preparing for another season of growth and exceptional wines.

The Vineyard’s Winter Dormancy: A Time of Rest

During the winter months, vines enter a dormant state, conserving energy and nutrients after the previous year’s harvest. This period of rest is crucial for the overall health and vitality of the vines. While the vineyard may appear quiet, much is happening behind the scenes. We closely monitor soil and weather conditions during winter, as they play a vital role in shaping the vines’ growth for the coming season.

Vineyard Pruning: Shaping the Future of Our Vines

A primary task in the winter months is vineyard pruning. This essential step involves removing old, dead wood (such as shoots and canes) from the vines to optimize airflow and sunlight exposure. Proper pruning encourages strong, healthy shoots, ultimately ensuring better grape quality throughout the growing season. By the time spring arrives, our vines are well-shaped, ready to awaken with the warmer temperatures.

Soil Preparation and Sustainable Fertilization

Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving vineyard, and it requires attention year-round. After pruning, we test soil health and adjust pH levels to create the optimal environment for vine growth. Sustainable soil fertilization practices are critical in this process, ensuring the vines receive the nutrients they need. This is a crucial step in producing high-quality grapes that will make our 2025 vintage exceptional.

Vineyard Maintenance: Fixing Fences and Trellises

Winter also brings the opportunity to inspect and repair the vineyard’s infrastructure. Our team focuses on maintaining the vineyard trellises and fencing systems that support the vines throughout the growing season. These structures are essential to ensure proper vine growth and the support of maturing fruit. Regular inspections and repairs also help prevent damage from winter storms and wildlife, ensuring the vineyard is in top condition for the new growth cycle.

Preparing for Bud Break: The First Signs of Spring

As temperatures rise, our vines begin to wake from dormancy. This early spring phase, known as bud break, marks the first signs of life emerging from the vines. This is a delicate moment in the vineyard, as we carefully monitor weather conditions to prevent frost damage, which can threaten young buds. Our team uses frost protection techniques like wind machines and overhead irrigation to ensure the vines survive this vulnerable stage.

Looking Ahead to the 2025 Growing Season

With the 2025 growing season just around the corner, all of the preparations above play a critical role in ensuring the health of our vines and the quality of the grapes they produce. The growing season can be unpredictable, but our experience in working with nature’s rhythms helps us consistently produce exceptional wines. By focusing on sustainable farming practices and paying attention to every detail, we are ready for another fruitful vintage.
